different writing styles

When I was having my bachelor's classes in my college in China, I was also required to do researches. Usually, we did the research on line just like what we are doing here in America. The biggest difference is the writing format. The writing format is not as strict as it is here. We don't have the requirement of MLA style or APA style. So when I was first asked to use these styles, I was so confused and could not do it well. Fortunately, my instructors and the assistants from the writing center offered me great help. Now I know how to do MLA style as well as APA style. I have recieved a lot of benifits from learning both of the styles. I also think it is very necessary to learn such skills because we should respect others' work and treat our work seriously. I will try my best to follow the exact rules every time I write my research paper.

Hi Shadow,
Yes, I totally agree with you. There are some differences beween China and America. When I studed in China, my professiors do not care my references and format. I needed to satisfied his other requests, such as depth of research and my analysis ablity. However, they cared where I quoted, too. If I plagiarized from somewhere, they could know. They almost knew all of knowledge in their fields. I was suprised about it. Combination does not work neither.
I feel disgusting when I hear acadamic plagiarisms in China. Professors as teachers have responsibilities to what they did. They would get a lot of money if they have big scholarships. Are you interested in these kinds of news? Did these issues happen around you? What do you think? It happened in the university that I graduated from. I feel very humiliated about it. I think Chinese don't pay enough attention to intellecture property from history to now.

I've only ever been in America but even I find it hard to use APA and MLA...they confuse me. I was homeschooled since sixth grade and the only style they ever required was MLA so I definitely have to ask for help from the teachers as well. I agree that it is a good thing to use though. When we use other peoples knowledge we need to make reference of it so that the author gets credit and our papers are credible.
